Adoption

Melissa and Laurence Groffman of Upper Montclair, NJ became the foster parents of Amaya, an African American girl when she was just days old.

"I love babies.I thought it was a good time in our lives to be a foster parent.  I wanted to do something to impact a child's life and give her a good start," Groffman said. "We really thought this was temporary.  We didn't think this was the start of parenthood".

Amaya met with her biological parents once every two weeks at DYFS (Division of Youth and Family Services).  If your hope is to adopt via fostering, it can be a long process. "Biological families are given many opportunities to put their families back together," Groffman said.

There is always the chance that the child will be reunited with her biological family. You have to be prepared for that emotional upheaval.

"There are a lot of ways to make a family," said Mary Beth Glickman of New York, who was in the process of adopting a daughter from Russia.

Glickman always knew she wanted to have children.  She's from a large Italian family with five siblings, two of whom have adopted children of their own, one from China and one domestically.  She also has five other nieces and nephews who are birth children.  Glickman began to explore adoption even before she got married at 40 years old.  Now at 42, Glickman and her husband, who is of Eastern European descent, are five months into the process of adopting a daughter from Russia.

If you're exploring adoption, there are many avenues to take, many decisions and choices to make.

"The overwhelming majority of forever families created through adoption are happy and loving success stories," Glickman said.
